Forming Process

Please use the attached Learning Team Charter, that I have adapted for the online environment from the one developed by UOP, to go through the initiation and formation of your team this week. This process will help you get started working together as a team.

Work through this for the next three days and submit to me in the Assignments newsgroup no later than midnight on Sunday. Also post a copy of it in your individual team newsgroups for future reference. You can either attach the document to the posting, or cut and paste it into the message (my preferred way of doing it).

A word about roles:

Even though one or more natural leaders always tend to reveal themselves as the team organizes, I suggest that you rotate roles on a weekly basis. This will help all of you to be actively involved in the team project and to practice some valuable team and leadership skills. The obvious roles would be leader, organizer, or spokesperson. But other roles to consider might be researchers, scribes, devil’s advocate or editor, etc.

You don’t have to use these exact names or roles, but consider the functions when you decide which roles you will use in your team and how they are assigned:

  • Team lead, leader, organizer, or spokesperson – this is the person who organizes the week’s work, monitors progress and submits the project or assignment when it is due.
  • Researcher – this is one or more team members who take a piece of the assignment and find the information or perform the function necessary.
  • Scribe or compiler – this is the person that everyone gives their pieces to, who then takes the pieces and compiles it together to make the whole assignment.
  • Devil’s advocate, or editor – This is the person who will take a critical look at the compiled assignment ( or any step along the way) to see if the assignment is complete, the find the ‘holes’ or those areas that aren’t very clear and ask for clarification or completion. Finally, this person looks for spelling and grammatical errors and APA formatting.

If you have three to four members in your team, obviously a member will be the team lead AND a researcher, or the editor AND a researcher. Or depending on the project and how many pieces it is divided into, one person may only have the role of one of the researchers and take responsibility for the largest piece or a couple of smaller pieces.

Using these roles, or some version of them, will help the team divide the work up fairly evenly, giving every team member opportunity to contribute. This should also prevent any one member from feeling that they are doing ‘all’ the work, or from feeling that they have been ignored or left out of the process. Create some sort of chart or calendar and fill in the role assignments. Attach this to the Learning Team Charter and submit it.

UOP has suggested that the teams complete and submit team evaluations every week. I'll be asking you to do this and to submit them to the Assignments thread. You can use this form each week. Learning Team Evaluation form

You may want to establish a schedule for the next five weeks based on the team project deliverables and decide who will fill which roles for which weeks.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
