Week 1

The Capstone Project

Overview:

The capstone project puts you in the seat as the instructional designer in an e-learning environment. This is meant to be a hypothetical situation, but you may use your real-life situation if it fits the project. It must be an adult learning situation.

You will be determining a performance gap, finding the solution and designing the appropriate e-learning activity to solve the problem.

The Capstone Project has been divided into these three section:

The details for each section are below. Please read through the entire project and start working on it this week. Post any questions that arise in the main newsgroup.


But first, you must complete UOP's Week 1 assignment:

Write a 1050-word Technology Changes Paper answering the following questions:

  1. What major advances in technology have occurred in the past 10 years?
  2. How do these advances impact the development and delivery of e-Education?
  3. What are the ramifications of these advances?

The Technology Changes Paper is due in Week 1 along with an executive summary presentation. Executive Summaries should be no more than 1 page in Word, or 5 slides in PowerPoint.

Post the paper in the Assignments Newsgroup and the Executive Summary in the Main newsgroup under the Week 1 thread.

Use the following naming convention for your paper file, techchange_firstinitiallastname.doc. For example, my paper would be named techchange_ecollinsbrown.doc.

Week 2

Background, Needs Assessment and Problem Statement - 10 pts.

Write a 500-word summary that outlines the background of the your hypothetical organization (company, institution, or other). This should include the size of the organization, the geographic scope of the company, the type of product or services the company produces, etc. Think in terms of how you will be able to implement a web-based, multimedia, mixed or fully online training product as a solution to a problem you will identify through your needs assessment.

Conduct a needs assessment for your 'organization'. Focus on finding the performance gap. The solution will be delivered using multimedia, web-based, or online; or a mixture of online and face-to-face (typically called blended).

Write a 500 - 1000 word Needs Assessment and Problem statement and add to the background summary. You may want to use the following questions as a guide:

  1. What is the problem? What is the current situation and why is this a problem?
  2. What is it that the learners should be able to do?
  3. What is the performance gap (The difference between the current and desired situation)?
  4. How much of the performance gap is caused by lack of knowledge, skills, motivation, and/or attitude? Explain.

Add this to your background paper (for a total of 1000 - 1500 words) and post in the Main newsgroup under the Week 2 thread, topic Needs Assessment.

Week 3 & 4

Clientele, Context and Content 20 pts.

Write a 1500 - 2000 word paper describing who the learners are, what the context is in which they are currently working and will be using the new skills, knowledge, etc., and what the solution to the performance problem will be.

Clientele and Context:

  1. Who are the learners?
  2. What is the learner's background, level of skill, knowledge, and motivation?
  3. What is the environment in which the learners work?
  4. What skills, knowledge, experience do the learners already have?
  5. What skills, knowledge, experience do the learners need to acquire to reach the desired performance level?

Content:

  1. What is your solution for narrowing the performance gap? Why?
  2. What are the implications of the learner characteristics and environment?
  3. What is the instructional goal for your training?
  4. What are your instructional strategies?
  5. What are your first and second choices for delivery? Explain your rationale and use research to support your ideas for each choice.
  6. What resources are available to you to create the instruction?

Week 5 & 6

Instructional/Training Design Plan - 15 pts.

Choose one lesson to develop a design plan for. Write a 1000 - 1500 word design plan answering the following:

  1. What are the topics and objectives for your training?
  2. What instructional materials will you develop? How will they be used? Explain your rationale and use research to support your ideas.
  3. How long will it take to deliver?
  4. How will you assess the learners? Explain your rationale and use research to support your ideas.
  5. How will you evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction? How will you evaluate if you closed the performance gap? Explain your rationale and use research to support your ideas.

Post in the Main newsgroup under the Week 6 thread, topic Design Plan.

Discussion Questions- 20 pts

With the new classroom model adopted by UOP in November, the Learning Teams are now allowed to answer the Discussion Questions. I have divided them between individual and learning team assignments. Generally there will be one individual DQ and one learning team DQ in Weeks 2, 3, 4 & 5. There will be no discussion questions in Week 6.

Individual discussion questions responses will be due Thursday of these weeks and the team discussion question responses will be due on Sunday.

Please refer to each week's learning module for the discussion questions.

Learning Team Evaluations- 10 pts

Per UOP's best practices for Learning Teams, I would like you to fill out a Learning Team Evaluation at the end of Week 2, 4 & 6. You may either copy and paste the word document in an email and send it to me, or edit the word document, save it with the week # somewhere in the filename and post it to the Assignments folder.
