Week 2/6
Discussion Questions

There will be 2 discussion questions each week. I will space these out over the course of the week, having the first one due on Saturday and the second on Monday of each week. I space them out to help you fulfill your participation requirements each week.

I post the questions at the beginning of each week, so feel free to work ahead and respond to both of them early in the week.

There will be no DQs in Week 6

DQ1 - Thursdays

DQ2 - Saturdays

Checking In

I will post a thread on Mondays of Weeks 2, 4 & 5 that will be a Check-In thread. I'll be asking you how you are doing, what particular problems you might be experiencing, etc. Please use this format for your response:

Tell us one thing you learned this week

Tell us one thing that you are still struggling with

Do you have any questions left unanswered at the end of this week?

Mondays
Effective Web Site Analysis

(10 pts. )

Using professional journals (and authoritative web sites), identify the top ten criteria for effective Web sites. Locate two web sites that meet the top ten criteria. Locate two web sites that meet less than five of the top ten criteria. Prepare a 700 - 1050 word paper listing the criteria and your critical analysis of the four web sites. Cite references using APA format.

HINT: You may want to use a table or matrix for your analysis. Refer to page 14 of the textbook (see project 1.1 under Lab Projects) for some ideas on how to format a table for this assignment

Week 1 - Monday
Personal Web Site (PWS)

Overview of the project: Watch this presentation - Overview of the Project

During the remaining weeks you will create a personal Web site. This web site could be the start of a professional portfolio that you can expand on and use after you graduate to exhibit your resume and projects.

The project is divided into manageable parts:

HTML Exercise - In this exercise you will create a basic web page by writing in HTML code. You will also create a page storyboard and a site flowchart as part of the planning and design work. Due in Week 2

Part 1 - you'll start using an authoriing tool. Your choices are Mozilla Composer or Dreamweaver 8. You will create your page layout and then duplicate it to create the other pages in your site. Due in Week 3

Part 2 - you learn how to embed multimedia elements in your pages. Due in Week 4

Part 3 - you will finalize your web site. The final site is due in Week 6.

Use the tutorials posted on the Tutorials page or conduct your own Web search for tutorials to learn how to create a web site.

Important:

The Personal Web Site assignment is a cumulative assignment, meaning that it is highly advisable that you complete each set of tasks in the week assigned or you'll experience difficulty continuing on. But you can get points for each task at anytime you complete it, whether it is far in advance of when it is due, or if you just didn't quite get it to work during a particular week.

For example, this week you must have two pages and have them linked to each other or you can't continue on with next week's assignment. But if you can't get your photo or graphic to load or your email link to work, that's ok, keep working on it.

Weeks 2 - 6
Personal Web Site (PWS)

HTML Primer (10 pts.)

The assignment:

Go through the HTML Primer in Week 2 . You will be using NotePad and writing HTML. This takes a little time to do, so get started early in the week.

10

Upload your Web site to your Web-host server and post the URL under the appropriate thread in Week 2.

Web Hosting:

Locate a Web host to upload your site to if your ISP does not give you server space. My past students have found Tripod and Geocities fairly easy to use. You can also use Angelfire, but my student and I find that it is not very user-friendly. I would check with your ISP first.

Whomever you decide to use will depend upon whether you can load audio, video, graphics and powerpoint files on the server. These are all some of the components that you will be required to incorporate into your web site. Some ISPs don't allow for some files types and functions. Print off the checklist for the web site assignment and make sure that you can do all of them on your web space with your ISP.

For the free sites, don't use any of the "Site Builder" functions. You can use the File Manager functions. The site builders create your pages for you, which defeats the purpose of this assignment and besides, I can tell if you've used one of the site builder templates, and I'll make you do it all over again from scratch. So you may as well do it the right way from the start, yes?

The File Manager functions on the free sites allow you to upload the files you create using NotePad (Week 2) and Mozilla Composer or Dreamweaver (Weeks 3 - 6) from your computer to the web server.

If you are using your own ISP, I would suggest that you use CoreFTP or Smart FTP to upload your files. You can find tutorials and information on how to download these programs on the resources page (Do Not Use and FTP program if you are using Angelfire, Geocites, or Tripod).

Again, I would strongly suggest that you find out where you’ll be uploading your pages and how to do it. In fact, in the first couple of days this week, find out how to do this and upload your index page or a sample page.

Lastly, you must upload your site to your server this week. Do not wait until Monday to upload your pages for the first time. I've had far too many students who have missed the due date because they experienced troubles at first. Upload a sample page in the first few days to give yourself enough time to figure out how to do it, and to trouble shoot any technical issues that may arise.

Week 2 - Monday
Personal Web Site - Part 1

Part 1- Begin to Build Your Website (8 pts)

Using either Mozilla Composer or Dreamweaver (any version):

Usa a table with invisible borders for layout on all of your pages 1
Index Page 1

Create a Personal Statement page that includes:

  • detail future goals after degree completion
  • include appropriate graphics
  • link professional journals and/or organizations
1
Create a Resume web page using a table for layout 1
Create a Samples page or Media page 1
email link 1
graphic or photo 1
Link all pages (using text links) 1
Total Possible Points 8

Upload all pages and files to your server and post the URL in the main classroom thread under Week 3.

Use the tutorials posted on the tutorials page. Begin with the Basic Website creation tutorials.

Again, use Mozilla Composer or Dreamweaver 8 (or other version). If you are going to be using another software, please let me know.

Week 3 - Monday
Personal Web Site - Part 2

Part 2 - Web site Enhancement (12 pts)

Continue using Mozilla Composer or Dreamweaver to incorporate elements of multimedia into your web site (12 pts.):

Replace text links with buttons 2
Create or link to a feedback form or guestbook 2
Create a privacy policy statement 1
Make the privacy policy statement open in a new browser window 1
Embed an audio clip 3
Embed a video clip 3
Total Possible Points 12

Continue to use the Basic Website Creation tutorials to help you complete these tasks.

If you need an audio or video clip to embed in your site, you can use one of the ones on the resources page.

You MUST use the embed tag for the audio and the video (NOT the powerpoint). You won't get credit for the task if you link to either or both of them.

Upload your files to the server and test.

Week 4 - Monday
Multimedia Presentation

Multimedia Presentation (10 pts)

Create an instructional/training project using PowerPoint or any other presentation software. Incorporate the following features into the project:

10-15 slides (no more)
  • slide transitions
1
  • button animation or an animated graphic
1
  • graphics
1
  • table or chart
1
  • action buttons
1
  • upload to server
1
  • link from web page
1
  • overall instructional design
1.5
  • overall user interface design
1.5
Total Possible Points 10

The topic or subject can be anything that interests you that you are familiar with. Former students have used family recipes, software training, language instruction, etc. as their subject. Just remember to keep it short and SIMPLE!

You will NOT be turning in the powerpoint but will be uploading it to your server and linking to it from your web page. This is what must be done by the due date.

Week 5 - Monday
Personal Web Site - Final

Website Final - (10 pts.)

This week you will work on getting all of the tasks completed for your web site and WORKING!

Remember that you get the points from earlier weeks when you get the task done and working.

This week's points will come from a couple of different sources:

  • 5 pts will come from the Grading Rubric
  • 5 pts will be based on overall design, form and function of the website as determined by a web design expert (me)

You have until the last day of the course to finish your web site and make sure that everything is included, uploaded and working. Use this week to correct anything that you've discovered over the past few weeks or to try something new. Post teh URL in the main classroom thread

Week 6 - Monday
